My 5 Tips to Relieve Stress: In this day and age (I sound so old like I've been on the planet more than 20 years... I haven't) it feels like everyone is on the run. I was listening to Allyssa and Jeff Bethke's podcast ( this morning on my way to work and they were talking about being present. This seems to be such a foreign concept, because everybody has so much on their plate and can hardly find a moment of silence. Our world is spinning so fast and it's a beautiful mess, but there are moments that it's just too much. I've struggled with being present and coming back to the moment lately because the stress of a busy life has taken over. I felt like I needed to take the tiniest step back to cool down. So I have compiled 5 things that help me destress that are all simple, logical, and bring you right back down to earth. I hope these help!

  • Be outside. I live in Canada, in the coldest city on Earth, seriously, it's proven. So in the wintertime it starts to feel like you're cooped up with nowhere to go. But do whatever you can to be outside for at least 15 minutes a day. For me, it's bundling up and taking my doggies for a really quick stroll. Humans really need to remember that outside and being in nature is so freeing, and that being inside 24/7 is not natural. Getting outside once a day is going to relieve you and freshen you up for the rest of the day. DSCN0180
  • Stretch. Friends, I used to think I was not the yoga type. Whenever I tried yoga-ing I would rush through it and I never really appreciated how freeing it is to take some silent time to yourself and to your body. I have never slept better, and felt more energized (even on 6 hours of sleep) than when I take anywhere from 3 or 20 minutes to stretch or do a quick yoga workout. I know the quality is quite unblogworthy but Jack was so intent on joining my practice on this particular day, and I couldn't not share!

  • Pray. I am recently trying to find God in my life as I wasn't brought up in a Christian home. It can be nerve racking to begin to pray if you've never learned how but having a few silent minutes with yourself, or with God, will put you back in the right mindset  to get on with your day. Even if you're not a religious person, taking 2 minutes to have a moment with yourself in this crazy world of constant running, will bring you right back down to Earth.
  • Physical activity. You guys I know when you're tired and stressed the last thing you want to do is get to the gym or get your blood pumping, hell you probably just want to take a cat nap (or a hibernation) but SERIOUSLY get your blood pumping for 5 minutes and I promise you it will perk you right up!! I used to try to get to the gym at least 5 days a week, which worked really well for me but I have found that yoga is just much more my thing. Find what feels good, and do that! Yoga is nowhere near as intense as my workouts used to be, but my muscles are just as strong, and I actually crave it instead of forcing myself. Just taking a few minutes to do something really good for your body and soul will energize you much more than a nap, promise.   • Be selfish. Most of us are stuck inside doing the things on our to do list every day, but our to do list rarely includes something that is solely selfish. Let me tell you, one small selfish act a day is how you keep yourself healthy, so you can continue to do everything on your never ending list. Read a few pages of your new or favourite book, listen to a quick podcast, bake yourself cookies (and eat them too, no ragrets), put things in your online shopping cart even if you don't buy (or do buy!), pay $5.00 for that overpriced cup of coffee, just take a few minuets to sooth your soul.
